Passion for Music

When we were designing this website, Greg asked me to write a little introductory paragraph, setting out my stall and giving a flavour of what you will find therein.

After a few moments thought, I realised that there is virtually no facet of my life to date that hasn’t been intimately connected with music in some fundamental way.

As a very young child I heard my mother, herself a devoted amateur soprano, singing in choirs, solo and as part of a number of vocal groups she was involved with. My father played both the trumpet and clarinet (which admittedly used to terrify me as a toddler!), and I developed a keen interest in immersing myself in music.

All through my school years, a near-obsession with the guitar (classical, folk and rock styles) opened up the opportunity to perform live and in the studio with many bands and to live the rock’n’roll dream (in between studying for a degree in Psychology).

My passion for singing was ignited when I became a member of the Band of An Garda Siochana. With the encouragement of the then Musical Director, John King, I began to study voice in the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

Today, my musical oddessy includes involvement with classical music and opera, wedding singing, live work (with bands, solo and in the studio), a member of a successful Eurovision songwriting team, composer, arranger, conductor, choirmaster and teacher.

I consider myself extremely lucky to have been afforded the chance to engage in all of these activities and the continued support of my wife and family ensures that I will continue to do so for as long as I possibly can.
